Benefits
- Lymantria dispar MNPV is a multiple nucleopolyhedrovirus (MNPV) preparation for the biological control larvae of the gypsy moth (Lymantria dispar).
- Control efforts with Lymantria dispar MNPV are necessary in order to manage the gypsy moth and to protect natural resources as well as forest integrity. The product can be applied from the ground or by air. Sylvar Technologies Inc. Canada, a subsidiary of Andermatt Biocontrol (60%), is the producer.
Pest Information
The gypsy moth (Lymantria dispar) is present in Europe, North America and Central Asia. Damage is caused exclusively by the polyphagous caterpillars, which feed on developing leaves of more than 300 tree species.
During severe outbreaks, trees and shrubs are completely defoliated over large areas, causing significant growth loss in forested ecosystems. In addition larvae cause contact dermatitis and are allergenic to humans.
